Biography

Scenic Art

I began my venture into scenic art at The Royal Exchange Theatre, it was there I cut my teeth. Being Fine Art trained, it seemed like a natural path for me to follow.

I now have over 25 years experience  across theatre, TV, film, photography studio and commercials. My work today is predominantly in film & TV.

I have experience working as Head Of Department (Scenic) and have run teams of up to 20 painters at any one time. I enjoy the challenges my job brings me and welcome problem solving.

At the heart of it, I love paint, the rest is experience and knowledge spanning 25 years.

Concept Art

It comes to many of us, that we want to broaden our mind and skill set.  Lockdown 2021 compounded this for me. I felt, whilst I still loved the scenic side, I  had an untapped skill  to offer. I had been playing around with photoshop for a while and decided that it was the perfect opportunity to push myself further into concept.  I found that I absolutely love doing it! I am still finding my feet with it but hopefully, you’ll agree that there is potential there. For me, it’s the perfect marriage of scenic film knowledge and fine art acumen and of course, I never tire of learning new things.

Fine Art

I am an archivist of all things uncomfortable. In my canvases I play with fleeting words and sound bites and they, in turn, fuel my imagery. I revel in irreverence. I do not see the works as complete chapters, to me they stand alone as their own sound bite or their own sentence. Typically, my imagery uses animals. To me, they imbue honesty, vulnerability and unpredictability. The narrative twists around these concepts.

I have a love of mark making, workings out, evolution of a painting. I like to show the process and have welcomed the intrusion of a quieter irreverence. These pieces have a more contemplative quality and sometimes playful. The aging and damage of a surface is fascinating to me…. conservationists dedicate their skills to restoration…. I actively ‘destroy’ my canvases. For me, that’s where the beauty of these pieces lives.
